הַלְלוּ־יָהּ
Alleluia
al-leh-LOO-yah
“Praise the LORD” in Hebrew — the Church's characteristic shout of joy, sung before the Gospel and throughout Easter, and set aside during Lent.
praise the LORD
Alleluia (or Hallelujah) is Hebrew for “praise Yah,” that is, praise the LORD. It opens and closes many psalms and rings through the heavenly liturgy in Revelation. The Church sings it before the Gospel at Mass and multiplies it at Easter, and, to sharpen the contrast, omits it entirely from Ash Wednesday until the Easter Vigil.
