הוֹשַׁע נָא
Hosanna
hoh-ZAH-nah
The Hebrew acclamation of Palm Sunday, sung at every Mass in the “Holy, Holy, Holy” just before the Eucharistic Prayer.
save, we pray! — which became a shout of praise
Hosanna began as a plea, “save us now,” from Psalm 118, and became a shout of welcome. The crowds cried it as Jesus rode into Jerusalem, and the Church cries it at every Mass in the Sanctus — “Hosanna in the highest” — as Christ comes among his people in the Eucharist. The Catechism reads that Palm Sunday entry as the beginning of the Passover of the Messiah, which the Mass celebrates.
