Ascension

Latin · Acts 1:9-11

Christ's bodily entry into heaven on the fortieth day of Easter, taking his humanity into the glory of the Father; celebrated on Ascension Thursday or the following Sunday.

a going up

Forty days after his Resurrection Jesus led his disciples out to Bethany and, as they watched, was taken up into heaven. The Ascension is not Christ leaving; it is his humanity being seated at the Father's right hand, where he intercedes for us and from where he sends the Spirit and will return. Because he has gone before us as our head, the Catechism says, we have the hope of following where he has gone. The feast is a holy day of obligation in many places.

Not to be confused with Assumption.
