Mary's “yes” to the angel, “Let it be done to me according to your word” — the model of every Christian's surrender to God's will.
let it be done — to me according to your word
Fiat is the Latin verb of Mary's answer to Gabriel: “Let it be done to me according to your word.” The same word opens creation in the Latin Bible — fiat lux, “let there be light” — and the Fathers loved the echo: the new creation begins with a young woman's consent. The Catechism says that by her fiat Mary became the mother of Jesus and, embracing God's saving will with a whole heart, gave herself entirely to the person and work of her Son. Christians use “my fiat” for their own yes to what God asks.
